FM 200/5AX Linear Machining Center

August 01, 2014

Utilizing state-of-the art linear motor and direct drive technology, Doosan introduces the FM 200/5AX Linear full 5-axis machining center. Developed for simultaneous 5-axis contouring, the FM 200/5AX Linear offers manufacturers the ultimate platform for machining a wide range of complex parts, including medical devices, automotive turbo chargers and other precision parts.

Doosan's FM200/5AX Linear machining center is built upon a rigid bridge-type base, composed of a highly stable mineral composite material. Because mineral castings absorb vibration at ten times the rate of iron castings and are much more thermally stable, finished parts are delivered with superior surface finishes, while tool life is increased dramatically.

The X, Y and Z axes on the FM200/5AX Linear are driven by high-precision linear motors, providing industry leading accel/decel feed rates with little to no backlash. The 4th and 5th axes rotary tables are equipped with direct drive motors to deliver matching levels of performance. The platten size is 7.9" in diameter with a capacity load of 33.1 lbs. Travels on the FM 200/5AX Linear are X-axis, 7.9", Y-axis, 13.4" and Z-axis, 11.8". Rapid traverse rates on all axes are 1968.5 ipm, with a cutting feed rate of 787 ipm.

Spindle speeds of 45,000 RPM are achieved with the FM200/5AX Linear's best-in-class 19 HP spindle featuring an HSK E40 taper. The result, vibration has been minimized and stability has been maximized. With 24-tool stations as standard, productivity is further increase with the reliability of a direct drive, servo-driven Automatic Tool Changer. Maximum tool diameter: 2". Maximum tool length and weight: 7.1" and 2.2 lbs.

Experienced machinists reportedly appreciate the benefits provided by Heidenhain CNC, especially when approaching a complex part with full 5-axis contouring. The FM200/5AX Linear's features a Heidenhain TNC control with an ergonomic swivel pendant and user friendly 19" screen.

Related Glossary Terms

  • backlash

    backlash

Reaction in dynamic motion systems where potential energy that was created while the object was in motion is released when the object stops. Release of this potential energy or inertia causes the device to quickly snap backward relative to the last direction of motion. Backlash can cause a system’s final resting position to be different from what was intended and from where the control system intended to stop the device.

  • computer numerical control ( CNC)

    computer numerical control ( CNC)

Microprocessor-based controller dedicated to a machine tool that permits the creation or modification of parts. Programmed numerical control activates the machine’s servos and spindle drives and controls the various machining operations. See DNC, direct numerical control; NC, numerical control.

  • feed

    feed

Rate of change of position of the tool as a whole, relative to the workpiece while cutting.

  • inches per minute ( ipm)

    inches per minute ( ipm)

Value that refers to how far the workpiece or cutter advances linearly in 1 minute, defined as: ipm = ipt 5 number of effective teeth 5 rpm. Also known as the table feed or machine feed.

  • linear motor

    linear motor

Functionally the same as a rotary motor in a machine tool, a linear motor can be thought of as a standard permanent-magnet, rotary-style motor slit axially to the center and then peeled back and laid flat. The major advantage of using a linear motor to drive the axis motion is that it eliminates the inefficiency and mechanical variance caused by the ballscrew assembly system used in most CNC machines.

  • machining center

    machining center

CNC machine tool capable of drilling, reaming, tapping, milling and boring. Normally comes with an automatic toolchanger. See automatic toolchanger.

  • rapid traverse

    rapid traverse

Movement on a CNC mill or lathe that is from point to point at full speed but, usually, without linear interpolation.
