The primary focus of metalworking applications revolves around maximizing efficiency of machinery and operations. Thus it is preferable to use metalworking fluids that are multifunctional in nature. Significant growth in metalworking processes worldwide have propelled demand for metalworking fluids. However, metalworking fluids used for machineries have undergone intense regulatory scrutiny in last two decades.
The leaders in metalworking and metal forming industries understand fluid recycling can have a positive effect on their bottom line. Coolants have improved significantly and are now better than those available 10 or 15 years ago. They last longer, but the cost has also increased. Depending where a business is located, shop managers may pay up to $50 per gallon for coolant. Disposal costs also vary significantly, anywhere from 25 cents to $6 per gallon.
Enhanced operational efficiency offered by industrial lubricants is bolstering their use in the constantly expanding manufacturing sector, as well as other industries such as power generation and oil and gas. Growing use of high-performance lubricants in these end-use industries is expected to drive market growth in the forecast period (2019-2027). As indicated by a new study, the global demand for industrial lubricants will progress moderately through 2027, reaching a value of US$ 28 Bn.
When metalworking fluids are used during machining processes, they generate airborne mists that facility operators must carefully control. If left unchecked, these mists can create a dangerous work environment and cause serious health problems for workers. The best engineering control to keep your shop safe and your business in regulatory compliance is a high-efficiency mist collection system designed for your specific application.
Should we continue with classic machining and coolant lubricants, or do dry machining and minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) represent viable alternatives? From a technology point of view, it is important to consider material properties and machine performance, but plant costs, energy and health aspects increasingly need to be included in any assessment of the overall process. Lubrication system manufacturers and scientists commented on these aspects in the first of this two-part series. Part 2 now looks at various machining technologies from the practical perspective of tool and machine manufacturers: a preview of EMO Hannover 2019.
Production managers in manufacturing often have to ask themselves: should we continue with conventional machining and coolant lubricants, or do dry machining or minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) represent viable alternatives? Several factors influence this decision. In Part 1 of this two-part series of technical articles being published in the run-up to EMO Hannover 2019, lubrication system experts and scientists give their assessment. Tool and machine manufacturers shed light on the subject in the second part.

A concentration of 0.5% VpCI-649 BD may be all that is needed to inhibit corrosion inside the tooling cooling water system. As time passes, this concentration may change as water is lost. Workers should therefore periodically monitor the water (e.g., by the molybdate tracer or refractometer) to make sure the right level of VpCI®-649 BD remains. Additional water or VpCI-649 BD can be added as needed to maintain the proper concentration of corrosion inhibitor for protection.

oelheld has been on the forefront of lubricant innovations for over 130 years. The company's R&D team in cooperation with machine manufacturers, universities and customers know exactly what to expect from water-miscible coolants and their challenges. Water-miscible coolants have many advantages over their straight oil counterparts, but they also have some well-known disadvantages such as corrosion (machines and parts), lubricity (tool life) and sump life (fungi, bacteria). This has been the motivation for the R&D department to break new ground and develop new products that guarantee that most of these disadvantages are a thing of the past. These expectations, special requirements and problems have been taken care of as a result of this extensive R&D work, which resulted in the development of the AquaTec 7655 coolant.
Corrosion may not be the first word that comes to mind when thinking of preventative maintenance. Yet, it can be a critical part of keeping vital “nerve centers” going at any facility — making sure the lights stay on; the electricity continues working; and servers, phone systems, fire alarms and other electrical controls keep functioning. Electrical or electronic failures mean interrupted operations, downtime, repairs and extra costs. Fortunately, Cortec VpCI solutions require minimal effort with big returns on corrosion protection.
When grinding carbide and HSS tools in large industrial volumes, large filter and central systems for cleaning contaminated grinding oils are worthwhile in several ways, like the filtration systems from filter specialist VOMAT in Treuen, Germany. They offer ultrafine filtration systems that can be individually customized to customer-specific production conditions.
Greases are a regular part of maintenance and always will be. Moving parts and high-pressure points need lubrication to reduce friction and wear for smoother operations and longer equipment life. The difference today is that maintenance crews no longer have to rely on common petroleum-based greases but can opt for biobased options with lower environmental impact and superior lubricity. Cortec’s broad selection of EcoLine greases make it easy to start the move toward greater environmentally responsible maintenance in any industry.
JTM Products Inc. has announced a new generation industrial multipurpose penetrant/lubricant.
