DrillForce-Meister Makes Large Diameter Flat Bottom Hole Drilling Simple, Efficient

Tungaloy has expanded its DrillForce-Meister exchangeable head drill series by adding SMF style flat head drill tips — the latest drilling innovation to tackle large diameter counterboring challenges.

DrillForce-Meister uses exchangeable drill tips designed to efficiently open large diameter holes ranging from 20.0 mm to 40.0 mm (.787″ – 1.575″) at a lower cost. With the drill tips being exchangeable, DrillForce-Meister not only eliminates the need for regrinding and recoating, as is the case with solid carbide drills, but also reduces the amount of tool float inventory kept to avoid machine downtime, thus minimizing the overall cost per hole in high volume production lines. Since the drill can always be used with a fresh blade that meets the required finished dimensions in the workpiece, the drill’s dimensional stability and tool life predictability are always guaranteed.

DrillForce-Meister features a unique clamping design where the drill tip is securely retained in place with the clamping screw and supported with large contact surfaces between the drill tip and body, enabling reliable hole making operations, while allowing quick and easy tool changes.

For customers seeking to improve productivity in their flat bottom hole processes, DrillForce-Meister introduces SMF200, SMF300 and SMF400 flat head drill tips.

The new SMF drill tip can create flat bottom holes, enabling one step counterboring without requiring a start hole or end milling processes. The SMF’s unique cutting edge form allows easy penetration into the material with inclined or irregular surfaces, while improving the precision and minimizing the shifting of the hole position. The drill diameters are available in a range from 20.0 mm to 40.0 mm (from .787″ to 1.575″). The drill tips are available in AH9130, a dedicated grade for hole making applications with exceptional wear resistance in various materials. The SMF is suitable for parts and materials found in a wide range of industries from power generation, automotive, general engineering and industrial machine builders with sizeable machine parts and components.

Related Glossary Terms

  • counterboring

    counterboring

Enlarging one end of a drilled hole. The enlarged hole, which is concentric with the original hole, is flat on the bottom. Counterboring is used primarily to set bolt heads and nuts below the workpiece surface.

  • flat ( screw flat)

    flat ( screw flat)

Flat surface machined into the shank of a cutting tool for enhanced holding of the tool.

  • gang cutting ( milling)

    gang cutting ( milling)

Machining with several cutters mounted on a single arbor, generally for simultaneous cutting.

  • milling

    milling

Machining operation in which metal or other material is removed by applying power to a rotating cutter. In vertical milling, the cutting tool is mounted vertically on the spindle. In horizontal milling, the cutting tool is mounted horizontally, either directly on the spindle or on an arbor. Horizontal milling is further broken down into conventional milling, where the cutter rotates opposite the direction of feed, or “up” into the workpiece; and climb milling, where the cutter rotates in the direction of feed, or “down” into the workpiece. Milling operations include plane or surface milling, endmilling, facemilling, angle milling, form milling and profiling.

  • wear resistance

    wear resistance

Ability of the tool to withstand stresses that cause it to wear during cutting; an attribute linked to alloy composition, base material, thermal conditions, type of tooling and operation and other variables.
