Machine tool builder Mazak Corp. has invited manufacturers to its "Discover More With Mazak" event July 29 and 30 at the company's Southwest Technology Center in Houston. The company will demonstrate its latest multitasking, 5-axis, milling and turning processes on Mazak machines, including the:

  • Integrex i-300S Multi-Tasking machine, which employs a second spindle to efficiently produce medium to large complex parts;
  • Quick Turn Nexux 550 MY turning center, featuring milling capability and Y-axis functionality to process long, large-diameter parts in single setups;
  • Orbitec 20 large part machining center, which can perform a variety of operations on difficult-to-rotate workpieces in a single setup; and
  • Vertical Center Universal 400A 5X vertical machining center, which uses a 5-axis rotary/tilt table to bring value and precision to small parts processing.

Applications engineers will also be available to discuss new ways attendees can streamline their operations. For example, performing multiple processes in a single setup helps minimize material handling and work-in-process. Furthermore, the company encourages attendees to present their part-production challenges so its engineers can offer solutions for overcoming such difficulties.

Mazak will also host technical seminars that encompass different ways in which job shops can streamline their operations and speed up product delivery using advanced complementary machine tool technology such as Renishaw gauging and Schunk workholding.

The 30,000-sq.-ft.Mazak Southwest Technology Center is located at 10950 Greenbend Blvd., Houston, Texas, which is part of the Greenspoint District, a community 15 miles north of downtown Houston and nearby the Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Registration for the event is available at www.mazakusa.com/MoreJobShops.

Related Glossary Terms

  • gang cutting ( milling)

    gang cutting ( milling)

    Machining with several cutters mounted on a single arbor, generally for simultaneous cutting.

  • machining center

    machining center

    CNC machine tool capable of drilling, reaming, tapping, milling and boring. Normally comes with an automatic toolchanger. See automatic toolchanger.

  • milling

    milling

    Machining operation in which metal or other material is removed by applying power to a rotating cutter. In vertical milling, the cutting tool is mounted vertically on the spindle. In horizontal milling, the cutting tool is mounted horizontally, either directly on the spindle or on an arbor. Horizontal milling is further broken down into conventional milling, where the cutter rotates opposite the direction of feed, or “up” into the workpiece; and climb milling, where the cutter rotates in the direction of feed, or “down” into the workpiece. Milling operations include plane or surface milling, endmilling, facemilling, angle milling, form milling and profiling.

  • turning

    turning

    Workpiece is held in a chuck, mounted on a face plate or secured between centers and rotated while a cutting tool, normally a single-point tool, is fed into it along its periphery or across its end or face. Takes the form of straight turning (cutting along the periphery of the workpiece); taper turning (creating a taper); step turning (turning different-size diameters on the same work); chamfering (beveling an edge or shoulder); facing (cutting on an end); turning threads (usually external but can be internal); roughing (high-volume metal removal); and finishing (final light cuts). Performed on lathes, turning centers, chucking machines, automatic screw machines and similar machines.
