Indexable-insert milling tools machining aluminum

Posted as a supplement to "Variations on a theme," a feature article published in the June 2015 issue of Cutting Tool Engineering, this video shows Millstar’s indexable-insert milling tools machining aluminum. Tried-and-true aluminum alloys continue to do the job for multiple applications, and toolmakers have enhanced their offerings to more effectively machine a metal that’s generally considered easy to cut.

Keyseat cutters

Whitney Tool Co. Inc.’s solidcarbide keyseat cutters are available in diameters from 1⁄8" to 1 ½". The cutters perform many slotting operations, such as circular interpolation in small-diameter holes. They reportedly are rigid and provide long life, often resulting in higher production rates when cutting difficult to machine materials.

WIDIA demos high-speed trochoidal milling

Milling metals hardened to 52 HRC and harder with solid-carbide cutters doesn’t require a heavy-duty, high-performance machine tool when a machinist employs trochoidal milling and applies cutting tools with an appropriate substrate, coating and geometries.
