United Grinding North America, the Miamisburg, Ohio-based provider of cylindrical grinding machine tools, has scheduled a six-city demonstration tour of the United States, as well as two open house events in Canada and Mexico, to demonstrate its STUDER S11 production workpiece.

First introduced at EMO 2013, the S11 is the smallest machine in the STUDER portfolio and is designed for small workpieces up to 7.9" (200mm) in length and 2" (50mm) in diameter. According to Ted Neckel, director of corporate marketing for United Grinding North America, the compact cylindrical grinding machine delivers a high level of productivity and Swiss precision.

Furthermore, the S11 is one of the first machines to feature the new United Grinding Group design protocol that brings added value to customers in terms of ergonomics and operability, according to the company.

"By showcasing the S11 at key channel partner locations across North America, we can effectively demonstrate and/or discuss the machine in close proximity to our customers," said Neckel. "In today's competitive marketplace, manufacturers don't want to spend a lot of time away from their operations, and product showcase initiatives such as this quickly and easily get them in front of new technology and then back to work."-

United Grinding will conduct live grinding demonstrations on the S11 at STUDER distributor locations in Greer, S.C. (Feb. 19 and 20); Rochester, N.Y. (Feb. 26 and 27); Brecksville, Ohio (March 5 and 6); Livonia, Mich. (March 12 and 13); Itasca, Ill. (March 26 and 27) and Los Alamitos, Calif. (April 22 and 23). The open house in Canada will take place April 8 and 9 in Woodbridge, Ontario, while the dates and location for the open house in Mexico are forthcoming.

Related Glossary Terms

  • cylindrical grinding

    cylindrical grinding

Grinding operation in which the workpiece is rotated around a fixed axis while the grinding wheel is fed into the outside surface in controlled relation to the axis of rotation. The workpiece is usually cylindrical, but it may be tapered or curvilinear in profile. See centerless grinding; grinding.

  • grinding

    grinding

Machining operation in which material is removed from the workpiece by a powered abrasive wheel, stone, belt, paste, sheet, compound, slurry, etc. Takes various forms: surface grinding (creates flat and/or squared surfaces); cylindrical grinding (for external cylindrical and tapered shapes, fillets, undercuts, etc.); centerless grinding; chamfering; thread and form grinding; tool and cutter grinding; offhand grinding; lapping and polishing (grinding with extremely fine grits to create ultrasmooth surfaces); honing; and disc grinding.

  • grinding machine

    grinding machine

Powers a grinding wheel or other abrasive tool for the purpose of removing metal and finishing workpieces to close tolerances. Provides smooth, square, parallel and accurate workpiece surfaces. When ultrasmooth surfaces and finishes on the order of microns are required, lapping and honing machines (precision grinders that run abrasives with extremely fine, uniform grits) are used. In its “finishing” role, the grinder is perhaps the most widely used machine tool. Various styles are available: bench and pedestal grinders for sharpening lathe bits and drills; surface grinders for producing square, parallel, smooth and accurate parts; cylindrical and centerless grinders; center-hole grinders; form grinders; facemill and endmill grinders; gear-cutting grinders; jig grinders; abrasive belt (backstand, swing-frame, belt-roll) grinders; tool and cutter grinders for sharpening and resharpening cutting tools; carbide grinders; hand-held die grinders; and abrasive cutoff saws.
