Rigidity is the key to improving tool life and improving finishes. When using our products, cutting force variations are lowered while reducing spindle loads, which lead to improved tool life. This reduction of forces is achieved by improving the fit of the toolholder with the taper of the spindle.

Testing has found that toolholder tapers expand when retention knobs are installed. Toolholders are designed to have an AT3 taper or better. This taper tolerance is critical for the toolholder to properly mate with the spindle. When a retention knob is installed into a toolholder, it distorts the small end of the taper of the toolholder. A distorted toolholder will fall out of the spindle and move during engagement. This movement of the toolholder in the spindle creates harmonics, spindle wear, and increases cutting force variations.
