Sandvik breaks ground in New Jersey

Sandvik AB and its tooling division, Sandvik Coromant, broke ground on Nov. 30, 2012, for construction at a location neighboring its current U.S. headquarters in Fair Lawn, N.J.

The new facility will serve as Sandvik’s U.S. head office and as a hub for Sandvik Coromant’s Market Area Americas, a strategic geographical alignment dedicated to increasing synergies between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Latin America. Sandvik AB, with global headquarters in Sandviken, Sweden, offers advanced products and services in cemented carbide and high-speed steel cutting tools, materials technology, and mining and construction equipment.

“We’re proud to reaffirm our roots in New Jersey,” said Johan Israelsson, president, Sandvik Coromant, Market Area Americas. “Superstorm Sandy dealt a blow to many in this state, but we’re not going anywhere. Our new facility will keep Sandvik Coromant headquartered in the same community we’ve been in for 57 years.”

The groundbreaking kicked off construction of the 108,000 sq.-ft., facility, which will meet Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) standards. The energy-efficient facility will provide general office space, a Productivity Center and an Aerospace Application Center.

The new Sandvik Coromant Productivity Center will offer a balance of theory-based training courses, technical seminars and hands-on machining demonstrations. In addition, the Productivity Center will be staffed with training specialists and machining experts who will educate customers on improving metalcutting efficiency and productivity.

The Aerospace Application Center will be equipped with new machine tools and will focus on projects for machining composite materials and high-temperature and titanium alloys for aero frame structural parts and engine components. The center will be staffed by a team of industry specialists that support customers by helping them develop new manufacturing processes.
