GKN Driveline expands offerings with acquisition

Manufacturer of automotive driveline components GKN Driveline has announced that its acquisition of Getrag Driveline Products will allow the company to provide complete driveline systems.

The acquisition added to GKN Driveline’s product portfolio: geared driveline products including power transfer units, rear drive units for all-wheel-drive vehicles and final drive units for high performance rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

“The acquisition now allows us to provide our global customers with ‘one-stop’ shopping for our leading-edge products by offering complete driveline systems—from the transmission differential to the wheel end,” said Dr. Ray Kuczera, vice president of engineering for GKN Driveline.

GKN Driveline is the all-wheel-drive components businesses of Getrag KG in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

The $440m acquisition, which was completed October 2011, included manufacturing plants in Newton, N.C. and Koping, Sweden, and engineering facilities in Sterling Heights, Mich. and Cologne, Germany—and also included about 1,500 employees.

In addition to a complementary geographical and customer footprint, the acquisition gives GKN Driveline, Auburn Hills, Mich., the ability to support customers with all-wheel-drive and eDrive systems, including fuel-efficient driveline systems.

The acquisition also provided important manufacturing to GKN Driveline in the U.S., including ground hypoid gear manufacturing, advanced vacuum carburizing and single piece flow assembly.
