In This Month's CTE
Highlights from the February issue of CUTTING TOOL ENGINEERING
Magazine:
Building for
Micromachining
Machine tool builders define and design the high-accuracy machines for
making microparts in this month's cover story. Atometric Inc., Biosite Inc., Kern Precision Inc. and
SmalTec International contributed to this report.
Taming the
'Nastalloys'
Turning nickel-base superalloys requires close
attention to cutting speed, feed rate, DOC, tool geometry and coolant application. Check out these
and other tips for turning nickel-base superalloys. ATI Stellram, K.L. Steven Co. Inc., Sandia
National Laboratories, Sandvik Coromant Co. and Walter USA Inc. contributed to this report.
Automated
Savings
Automated dispensing and tracking of cutting tools can
lead to several practical benefits, not the least of which is reduced tooling costs. DGI Supply,
Morgan Bronze Products Inc. and Sealmaster (Emerson Power Transmission) contributed to this
report.
Powder Power
Knowing the basics of tungsten carbide grades, including their
characteristics as cutting tool materials, can help parts manufacturers choose the right tool for an
application. ATI Alldyne—an Allegheny Technologies company—contributed this report.
Three
Paths Forward
Steve Logee of Wilcox Associates Inc. provides a user's
guide to selecting metrology software for on-machine probing from basic to advanced.
Working
Software Hard
Take a closer look at CAM software features that can
save parts manufacturers programming time. Coldwater Machine Co. LLC, DP Technology Corp., Gibbs and
Associates, JD Machine, MPC Products Corp. and Planit/Pathtrace Ltd. contributed to this report.

Endmills introduced for roughing and finishing titanium
Onsrud Cutter LP offers roughing
and finishing endmills for deep-pocket milling of titanium. Designed for high metal-removal rates,
the roughers feature variable flute indexing that reduces chatter, according to Onsrud. Longer tool
lengths have a large core diameter that prevents chatter caused by deflection. The finishers have a
shallow flute design combined with a large core diameter to prevent deflection when applying long
length tools. An eccentric relief creates a dampening effect to further reduce chatter when milling
floors and thin walls. The finishers' corner radii range from square to 0.250".

Wire EDM to be introduced at WESTEC 2008
GF AgieCharmilles will debut its CUT 20 wire EDM
at WESTEC 2008, which takes place March 31 to April 3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The
EDM's new and intuitive human-machine interface is built on a Windows XP platform and was designed
with "non-EDM experts" in mind. The IPG-V generator's electronics make fast metal-removal
rates possible, even with economical brass wire, according to the company. In addition, the low
energy consumption and long working life of the wear parts reduce operating costs.

Retention knob clamping spindles available on benchtop tool
presetters
BIG Kaiser Precision Tooling Inc. announces the
availability of integrated mechanical retention knob clamping for CAT and BT 40- or 50-taper tooling
for all models of Speroni STP-34 benchtop tool presetters. The system applies a tool clamping force
of more than 150 lbs. to seat steep-taper tooling into the tool presetter spindle similar to the way
it is drawn into a machine's tool spindle. The integral spindle design can be specified for tools
with MAS, JIS and ASME retention knobs.

Demand for abrasives in U.S. to reach $5.3 billion in
2011
Demand for abrasives in the U.S. is forecast to increase 2.3% per annum
through 2011 to $5.3 billion, with raw material demand reaching $1.4 billion. Gains will be aided by
the upturn in production of electrical and electronic products and motor vehicles, which are
expected to recover from the declines of the 2001-2006 period.
