CNC Principles and Manufacturing practice

Genius Metal Inc., Monrovia, Calif., reports that it is developing a new breed of carbides that lasts longer by replacing the standard binder metal, which is cobalt, in the tungsten-carbide matrix with alternative metal binders that are harder and have more temperature resistance. Although the new tooling is not yet in production, samples and consultation services are available. Head-to-head trials conducted at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif., showed that the Genius Metal tools lasted more than twice as long as the tools with traditional cobalt binder with only a marginal increase in cost.
